Lasting contentment?

Some where in my mid forties it began to dawn on me that lasting contentment could not be bought, was not at the bottom of a bottle or indeed any artificial stimulant, had nothing to do with multiple orgazms, and human relationships seemed to bring as much if not more pain than pleasure . The only thing that has made any progress in this direction is a long slow and sometimes painful journey into my own mind. I would very much apreiciate your thoughts on this matter if you have the time
