Different types of cichlids? Help me pick!?

I have had several aquariums before, and Im geting a 50 gal. this weekend. I want to put cichlids in it but I know there are many different groups that can be kept together (Tanganyika, Victoria, Malawi...??) Can someone explain the differences to me and the different requirements? I want the most colorful varieties but not too big. Thanks!
